UT Austin grade distributions
To read UT Austin grade distributions, choose a course and term, then inspect the section’s grade counts and denominator in the course explorer. An absent course or instructor can reflect confidentiality restrictions or unavailable public rows, so it is not a zero or a difficulty rating.
- Choose the course identifier, then the relevant term or supported instructor view.
- Read the reported sample size, grade categories and source date beside the chart and HTML table.
- Keep the same course and comparable filters when reviewing historical sections; retain missing and suppressed-data notes.

What the data adds
- A-only share changed between two public term samples
- For ACC 311, A-only grades account for 37.41% in Fall 2024 and 21.66% in Spring 2025—a 15.75 percentage-point difference.Original count-pooled comparison: 318/850 versus 60/277 letter grades, from 16 and 5 available public sections. The cohorts and public coverage differ; this is not a complete-enrollment, teaching-quality or causal comparison. - A lower A share did not mean a lower distribution mean
- The same ACC 311 samples have calculated means of 3.13868 and 3.16989, respectively. The Spring sample’s mean is about 0.03 points higher despite its lower A-only share.Original calculation from every supported letter bin using UT’s 4/3.67/3.33/etc scale. Other 108/20 is retained separately and excluded from the letter denominator. Mean grade points and the A share answer different questions. Find the course before reading the percentage
Use the course explorer for the course title, current catalog context and available historical grade rows. The official UT dashboard is the institutional source and provides bar-graph and crosstab views.
- Resolve the exact department and number, including the full letter suffix.
- Select the actual term. A historical course record does not prove the course is offered in the next registration period.
- When an instructor view is supported, use its supplied identifier. A missing name must not be guessed from a similarly named person.
- Open the underlying counts and source; keep a shareable view with the filter state.
The official UT dashboard supplies the ACC 151, Fall 2024 and ACC 310F, Summer 2011 section examples below. Open ACC 311, Fall 2024 for the separate pooled term comparison. A course-wide term view may include more sections than a single-section example.

Read the counts and categories together
An A-only share counts A. An A-range share counts A plus A-. State which one is shown. A letter-grade percentage normally uses the sum of the supported letter categories as its denominator; a percentage of every reported record is a different measure.

Means use the count-weighted UT fine letter-grade scale and exclude Other. They are calculated distribution summaries, not a published student GPA. Data retrieved October 27, 2026.
Download these public counts as CSV to reproduce every displayed percentage. The Summer 2011 export calls the course ACC F310F; its original identifier remains in the download beside the documented canonical ACC 310F identifier.

How the displayed mean is calculated
For a supported section, multiply each reported letter-grade count by the corresponding UT point value, add those products, then divide by the included letter-grade count. For example, ACC 151’s count-weighted mean is (138 × 4 + 6 × 3.67) ÷ 144 = 3.98625.
UT’s current scale assigns A = 4.00, A- = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, B = 3.00 and the corresponding lower letter values through F = 0. The mean in these examples excludes Other. A transcript GPA also depends on credit hours and the university’s inclusion rules, so this section summary cannot replace an official GPA.
Do not apply a general UT scale to unsupported historical Law/A+ categories. Those rows keep their categories while a general-scale mean remains unavailable. Read the explorer method and official grade scale before comparing summaries.
For your own credit-hour arithmetic, use the separate UT GPA calculator. It estimates an entered scenario; it does not read your transcript or decide program eligibility.

Here, the A-only share is lower in Spring while the mean is slightly higher. Inspect the complete bins instead of substituting either statistic for the other. Download the pooled counts, or open the source-linked Fall 2024 view and Spring 2025 view.

Start with the same course identifier, then compare the selected term, section coverage, included categories and sample size. A pooled percentage should be calculated by summing counts, not by taking an unweighted average of percentages from unequal sections.
Course design, student population, grading mode and time period can change. Even two properly calculated historical means do not isolate an instructor’s effect. Do not treat a high A share as a promise about your result, the workload or teaching quality.
A shareable course view records the selected term or supported instructor filter. Its displayed source date still matters; a current page render does not make an older section newly taught or make an unoffered course available.
Keep catalog context beside the grade history
Read the current title, prerequisites, restrictions, cross-listings and credit hours before using a grade history in a schedule. The catalog is a description of academic requirements; the current Course Schedule supplies the actual term’s offerings, meeting times and seats.
Older grade rows can refer to a historical title or course that has no current catalog match. Keep that historical source label and make the missing current context explicit. Do not invent a current prerequisite, flag or equivalency to complete the join.
After selecting a possible course, use the registration and waitlist guide and your degree audit. A grade distribution does not establish that the course fills your requirement.

Missing and suppressed are not zero
UT says courses are omitted when confidentiality cannot be maintained because of course size or other restrictions. A public export can therefore be incomplete for reasons unrelated to course difficulty or student performance.
Keep an unavailable section, missing instructor and unsupported mean as separate states. A reported zero in an actual grade bin is different from an absent record. Do not reconstruct a suppressed group by subtracting neighboring totals.
The public rows are historical aggregate records, not unique students. One student can contribute results in multiple courses or terms. Counts of sections or grade bins must not be described as the number of UT students covered.

Questions answered
Where does UT publish official course grade distributions?
UT Institutional Reporting publishes a dashboard with bar-graph and crosstab views. The course explorer links the institutional source and retains the retrieval date, reported counts and filter state.

Why is my course or instructor missing?
UT can omit courses to preserve confidentiality because of course size or other restrictions. An instructor identifier or historical catalog match can also be unavailable. Missing is not zero enrollment, a zero grade count or a difficulty signal.

Can I compare the same course across terms and instructors?
Use the same full course identifier and compare the selected term, section coverage, categories and sample size. Use only supported instructor identifiers. Historical differences do not isolate teaching quality or predict a student’s outcome.

How are GPA and percentages calculated?
A letter-grade percentage divides the relevant reported count by the included letter-grade total. A supported section mean is the count-weighted UT letter-point mean, excluding Other. A-range includes A and A-; A-only does not. These summaries do not replace a transcript GPA.

Do these grades prove a class is easy?
No. The distribution describes the reported historical group. Student mix, course design, grading mode and term can differ, while suppressed rows and missing context limit comparison. Read the syllabus, prerequisites and your degree requirements as well.
