UT Austin AP credit: scores, courses and petition fees
Receiving an AP score is not the same as recording course credit. Check the course option before you claim it.
In this guide
To claim AP credit at UT Austin, match the exact exam and score to the official UT course listing, confirm the course fits your degree, then petition for the selected credit. Sending a score or qualifying for placement does not automatically post course credit to the transcript.
UT’s petition fee is $10 per selected credit hour, due within 14 days. Keep score receipt, course eligibility, the paid petition, transcript posting and the degree audit as separate checks.
Official exam-search examples, dedicated Calculus AB table, FAQ and fee instructions reviewed October 27, 2026. Course alternatives and fee examples are scoped to the cited instructions; degree use, actual score receipt and transcript status remain student-specific. No student record or petition was accessed.
Find the step that is still unresolved
Choose your situation below before taking another paid action. This checklist does not read your scores, select courses for you or submit a petition. Keep the degree requirement and the official course option beside each decision.
Choose the AP-credit step to resolve
My sent score is missing
Receipt/matching and a credit decision are different steps.
- Check the exam, sending confirmation and current UT EID.
- Read the official missing-score instructions.
- Ask Testing Services to resolve the match before assuming you need another exam.
I need the UT course for my score
The exact exam and score band control the listed option.
- Find the official exam page and score band.
- Keep course alternatives as alternatives.
- Ask advising which option fits the intended degree and prerequisites.
I have chosen useful credit and need to petition
Review course-credit hours before creating the charge.
- Confirm the course choice and degree use.
- Read the online petition and fee instructions.
- After you decide to proceed, use the official student workflow and actual payment record.
My petition is not on the transcript yet
Posting follows the university process rather than the selection click.
- Check the petition status and whether you have started UT coursework.
- Read the weekly reporting/posting schedule and holiday exception.
- After the credit posts, rerun the relevant degree audit.
I selected credit I do not want
Timing matters when asking about an unwanted petition.
- Contact Testing Services promptly with the actual petition state.
- Ask whether it has already been reported/written to the transcript.
- Do not assume posted credit can be removed or select more credit to fix it.
Read the exam and score band together
UT’s exam search says it awards at least one course for AP scores of 3 or higher except AP Comparative Government, AP Research and AP Seminar, which do not have matching undergraduate coursework. The course awarded can change with the score. Some results also offer course choices.
The selected examples below show why a simple “UT accepts AP” answer is incomplete. Confirm the live exam listing and the intended requirement rather than translating every passing score into the same number or level of courses.
Comparing the selected rows reveals two different patterns: Computer Science A changes from C S 302 at score 3 to C S 312 at scores 4–5, while English Language keeps RHE 306 for scores 3–5. The same numeric score therefore does not establish the same course outcome across exams. This is a source-table comparison, not a claim that a higher course number is always the right degree choice.
Calculus AB’s dedicated page lists M 408C for a 5 and alternatives M 408K or M 408N or M 408R for 3–4. “Or” is a course choice to resolve with advising, not an instruction to claim all three.
Scroll the table to compare every column.
| Selected AP exam | Score | Listed UT course option |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Science A | 3 | C S 302 |
| Computer Science A | 4–5 | C S 312 |
| English Language and Composition | 3–5 | RHE 306 |
| Calculus AB | 3–4 | M 408K or M 408N or M 408R |
| Calculus AB | 5 | M 408C |
Selected official exam-search examples reviewed October 27, 2026; Calculus AB also checked on its dedicated official exam page. The table preserves alternatives rather than adding them together; degree use still needs review.
Choose the requirement you need to satisfy
Write down the degree requirement before selecting a course option. If the listing offers several calculus sequences, ask which option fits the intended major and later prerequisites. The largest apparent credit total is not necessarily the best academic choice.
Use the degree-audit guide to identify the requirement and the audit’s program. Keep required coursework, elective credit and prerequisite preparation separate in the conversation. A course on the transcript may still leave a different program requirement unresolved.
Resolve a missing score before paying for another action
Student Testing Services explains that score-matching problems can involve a name difference or a UT EID used in an earlier university program. If the official score was sent but does not appear, contact the testing office with the details it requests.
Keep the exam name, test date, score-report destination and sending confirmation available. Do not assume that a missing display means the score was too low or that you should retake the exam. Those explanations lead to different actions and costs.
Petitioning is the step that reports the credit
The testing FAQ says students petition online for selected course credit to be reported to the Registrar. Review the actual course-credit hours and the fee before submitting the petition.
Review the selected courses before submitting. The FAQ treats credit already written to the transcript as permanent; a petition not yet reported may have different options. If you selected unwanted credit, contact Student Testing Services promptly rather than assuming you can remove it later.
The fee unit changes a simple comparison: three selected hours cost $30 at $10 per hour, while six cost $60—a $30 difference. The number of AP exams alone cannot reproduce that charge; the selected course-credit hours matter. These authored components exclude test-registration, test-taking and score-sending costs.
UT’s test-fee page separates a test registration charge, a variable test fee and the per-hour petition fee. Do not automatically attach a UT test-registration charge to an AP-credit claim when you are not registering for a UT-administered test. Review the actual charge before payment.
Check posting, then rerun degree progress
UT describes credit by examination as CR credit rather than a letter grade, and it does not count as credit earned in residence. That makes it different from adding an A to a University GPA. Use the GPA guide for letter-grade arithmetic.
Posting also has a schedule: entering freshmen who have not begun coursework should not expect petitioned credit on the transcript before they begin classes. Current students should check the petition status and their record after the weekly processing cycle, then rerun the relevant degree audit. Keep a registration deadline separate from the date you expect a petition to finish processing.
Use Testing Services’ exam search for related official course options. A completed score or petition step does not replace the fresh degree-audit check after credit posts.
