How do I change my major at UT Austin?

To move to another UT college or school, apply for internal transfer and, if accepted, submit the major change form. Spring applications are due December 1 only for majors that offer spring entry.

Which route applies to my change?

For a side-by-side view of every destination, use the UT internal-transfer requirements table.

UT’s internal-transfer page lists the colleges, available majors and their extra requirements. Start there if you want to move between colleges. For a change within your current college, ask its advising office which process applies.

Applying to UT from another university is an external transfer. This guide is for students who are already enrolled at UT. If Business is your destination, the McCombs internal-transfer guide covers its prerequisites and application cycle.

When can I apply?

The university timetable below gives estimated recurring windows. Check the destination major before planning a semester around one: some accept students only for fall.

UT says dates may move to the next business day. The application portal gives your cycle’s instructions.

Could my hours or semesters stop the change?

The university-wide limits use two different hour counts. Above 45 college credit hours, you need at least a 2.00 UT GPA. The transfer limit is 60 hours completed in residence at UT, or four fall or spring semesters in residence; exceptions go to the receiving dean.

For example, 36 UT hours plus 18 hours of other college credit total 54. That puts you above the 45-hour GPA threshold, but the 60-hour UT-residence limit still uses 36. Ask your adviser which credit belongs in each count.

A college with limited space allows only two applications to that college or school. Its own prerequisites, GPA rules and selection process can be stricter than these university minimums.

What finishes the major change?

  1. Find the destination major on UT’s internal-transfer page and read its entry-term rules.
  2. Compare a degree audit for the new major with your current plan, including prerequisites and extra semesters.
  3. Complete the major’s required preparation and submit the application by its deadline.
  4. Follow the portal for updates and, if accepted, submit its major change form.
  5. Check your major when the new enrollment semester starts.

What should I register for while I wait?

Choose a schedule that advances your current degree and, where possible, also prepares you for the new one. Map both outcomes before dropping a prerequisite you already need.

An application gives you a chance to change majors. Keep a workable graduation plan until you have both the admission decision and the major change form finished.

How we got this

The university-wide route and limits come from One Stop and the 2026–27 catalog. Each destination college controls its own selection rules; the credit-hour example is illustrative. Checked October 28, 2026. This is an independent undergraduate guide, not a decision on your own eligibility.
