01 / Foundation
There is no separate AI-search index to optimize
Google states that a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet before it can be considered for AI Overviews or AI Mode. That puts ordinary crawl access, a successful response, a defensible canonical, indexable visible content, and usable internal links ahead of every proposed “GEO” tactic. A page that is blocked, duplicated, empty in its initial HTML, or excluded by a snippet control has an eligibility problem, not an answer-format problem.
The practical workflow begins with the same evidence used for conventional Search: fetch the public URL, inspect the returned HTML, verify the canonical and robots directives, confirm that the important claims appear without a user interaction, and compare the declared URL with Google’s selected canonical. Only after those checks pass is it useful to study how a passage answers a question or supports a citation.
Eligibility is inherited from Search. Inclusion is still selective and never guaranteed.

Non-commodity evidence is the differentiator
A generic summary competes with every other summary and gives a generative system little reason to cite one source over another. A stronger page contains something that survives comparison: a measured result, a reproducible procedure, a firsthand observation, an original dataset, a precise decision table, or a clearly bounded interpretation. The value is not that the prose sounds authoritative. The value is that a reader can trace what was observed, what was inferred, and what remains unknown.
Structure helps when it exposes that evidence. Put the direct answer near the question, then show the conditions under which it holds. Name the object being discussed instead of relying on pronouns. Use tables for comparisons and code only when it is executable or diagnostic. Link primary sources at the claim they support. This improves extraction without converting the article into a pile of disconnected answer fragments.

Snippet controls affect what Google can show
Publishers can use familiar Search controls such as nosnippet, max-snippet, data-nosnippet, and noindex. These controls are not ranking boosts. They define whether content can be shown and how much may be used in a result. Tightening them can reduce what is available for an AI response as well as a conventional snippet, so the decision belongs to a publishing policy rather than a speculative optimization checklist.
Robots rules answer a different question: whether a crawler may request a resource. A blocked page can still be known by URL, and a crawler cannot read a page-level noindex directive if it is forbidden from fetching the page. Keep crawl access, index eligibility, snippet permission, model-training controls, and user-triggered retrieval as separate rows in the policy matrix.

Measure visibility without inventing a citation metric
Google introduced dedicated generative AI performance reporting for a subset of Search Console properties in June 2026. Where available, it separates impressions associated with generative experiences while preserving those events in overall Search performance. That is useful visibility data, but it does not turn every impression into a confirmed citation or reveal every query branch created through fan-out.
Use a dated baseline and compare page families, not isolated screenshots. Track impressions, clicks, click-through rate, position, landing page, country, and device. Add referral analytics for downstream visits and keep manual citation observations in a separate, explicitly sampled log. A stable position band and enough impressions are prerequisites for interpreting title tests; daily fluctuations are not an editorial verdict.
05 / Playbook
The defensible optimization sequence
Start with a crawl and rendered-HTML audit. Repair canonical, status, robots, internal-link, and content-availability failures. Then map one page to one distinct task and add the artifact that makes the answer worth selecting. Make the answer extractable, preserve nuance in adjacent text, and use structured data only when it matches the visible page and an applicable feature. Finally, validate the deployed response and establish the reporting baseline before changing titles or descriptions.
Do not add hundreds of query permutations, synthetic expert quotes, unsupported statistics, or an llms.txt file presented as a Google ranking mechanism. Those moves either create no documented advantage or cross directly into quality and spam risk. The serious route is less theatrical: build pages that deserve to exist without Search, make them technically available, and maintain enough evidence to know when a change helped.
