How to Read the Search Console AI Mode Report

The new report is useful precisely when it is treated as a bounded visibility instrument—not a universal citation counter or a substitute for landing-page analytics.

01 / Availability

First establish whether the report exists for the property

Google announced the dedicated reports on June 3, 2026 and described a rollout to a subset of websites. Absence is therefore not evidence of a configuration error, a penalty, or zero visibility. Record the property type, access level, date checked, and whether the Search and Discover variants appear before building an analysis workflow around them.

The events remain included in the overall performance report. The dedicated view is a segmentation surface, not a second source of clicks to add to the total. When exporting data, label the source and filter explicitly so a dashboard does not double-count the same event in overall Search and the generative AI slice.

02 / Metrics

Read the familiar metrics with a narrower denominator

The report exposes impressions, clicks, click-through rate, and dimensions such as page, country, device, and date. The definitions remain familiar, but the selected surface changes the denominator. Compare generative visibility with total Search visibility as a share and a trend, not as two independent campaigns with identical query behavior.

Start at page-family level. A family with many impressions and few clicks may reflect answer satisfaction, weak source prominence, a poor snippet promise, or a query mix that rarely requires a visit. A family with few impressions may have an eligibility, coverage, demand, or selection issue. The report alone cannot choose among those causes, so join it to URL Inspection, rendered-page checks, and analytics.

03 / Baseline

Baseline before optimizing the pages

Export at least the preceding 28 days where available, then annotate launches, migrations, title changes, manual actions, outages, and indexing shifts. For a new site or new route family, expect sparse data and preserve zeros rather than smoothing them away. A seven-day window is useful for operations; it is often too noisy for an editorial conclusion.

Define branded and non-branded segments outside the report if query detail is unavailable or incomplete. Use landing-page families and owned brand terms as a reproducible approximation, and state the limitation. Compare the same weekdays and device mix. A gain caused by one branded mention is real traffic but not evidence that a non-branded content strategy is working.

04 / Blind spots

The report is not a citation observatory

An impression indicates visibility under Google’s reporting rules. It does not provide the exact generated sentence, prove that a particular passage was cited, expose every fan-out query, or describe why one source was chosen. Manual observations can supplement the report, but they are sampled, location-sensitive, and subject to result volatility.

Analytics answers a different question: whether a person reached the site and what happened next. Keep Search Console clicks, analytics sessions, referral parameters, conversions, and manually observed citations as separate event classes. Differences between them are diagnostic clues, not automatically data loss or platform error.

05 / Decisions

Turn the report into a controlled editorial queue

Prioritize indexed pages with meaningful impressions, a stable position band, and a clear mismatch between the query task and the title or opening answer. Test titles before descriptions because the title carries the larger promise. Change one layer at a time, record the deployment date, and wait long enough for crawling and a comparable observation window.

For pages without impressions, do not rewrite snippets blindly. Verify crawl access, canonical selection, index status, internal links, and whether the page adds a distinct answer. For pages with impressions but no clicks, inspect the live result and the on-page promise. For pages with clicks, protect the winning intent while strengthening the evidence and conversion path.
