commute

Test the trip to your actual class building

Use your first class and last return trip as the commute test.

  • Enter the apartment street address and your class building in the CapMetro planner; choose the actual weekday and arrival time.
  • Record the whole trip: walk to the stop, waiting, transfers and the final walk across campus.
  • Repeat the search for the trip home after your latest lab, shift or study session.
  • Check current alerts and stop closures, then try the route in person before committing.
  • Carry a physical UT photo ID for eligible no-charge services; a virtual ID is not accepted.

commute

Check Sundays and academic breaks

A nearby shuttle stop does not establish year-round service.

  • Open the official UT calendar for each date you expect to travel, including Sundays, finals, winter and summer.
  • The checked fall calendar marks November 21–28, 2026 as no UT shuttle service; recheck before travel.
  • Sunday service is a separate level, generally beginning in the afternoon; verify the route and departure you need.
  • Test a mainline CapMetro alternative for days when the UT shuttle is unavailable.
commute

Trace the accessible route from your door

Vehicle access is one part of the journey.

  • Tour the path from the exact unit to the sidewalk, bus stop and campus building entrance, including elevators and crossings.
  • CapMetro buses provide ramps or lifts; verify the stop and path fit your mobility needs.
  • If fixed-route travel is not usable, review Access eligibility and service-area rules directly with CapMetro; a disability alone does not establish eligibility.
  • PTS Pickup is a free campus service with weekday hours and holiday closures. Check its campus boundary before treating it as a home commute.
commute

Plan the trip after a late library night

UT Night Rides has specific hours, pickup origins and drop-off zones.

  • Check whether your exact address is in the published home drop-off zone and activate the UT Lyft pass in advance.
  • The current program runs 11 p.m.–4 a.m. for active UT affiliates, beginning at Main Campus, PRC or DPRI.
  • Use Standard service in Personal mode and confirm the qualifying fare in the app before booking.
  • Review available monthly credits and excluded costs. Extra stops or upgrades can remove the credit; tips, cancellations and some surcharges are not covered.
neighborhood

West Campus: compare the block and the building

Use the exact entrance and destination, rather than a neighborhood-wide walk claim.

  • Check the walking route to your department, not only Guadalupe or the Tower.
  • Route 642 serves the West Campus corridor; confirm the nearest usable stop and direction.
  • Tour the unit and street at the hours you expect to study and sleep.
  • Price residential parking and any campus parking separately.
neighborhood

North Campus / Hyde Park: test your department trip

The broad area reaches from the campus edge toward 51 st Street.

  • Compare the actual route to engineering, science or your own class building.
  • Route 656 serves the Speedway / Guadalupe / intramural-fields corridor; other addresses need a separately planned route.
  • Check alerts for changed stops, including current Duval Street work when relevant.
  • Test groceries and laundry as part of your normal week.
neighborhood

Riverside: verify the return trip as carefully as the ride in

Routes 670 and 672 serve different corridors and campus stops.

  • Identify the correct route, stop and direction for the exact address.
  • Record waiting and transfer time as well as the in-vehicle ride.
  • Check the current Riverside / I-35 construction alert if it affects your route.
  • Price a workable backup for shuttle breaks and late returns.
neighborhood

Far West: check the whole daily trip

Route 661 serves the Far West corridor and reaches Dean Keeton / Whitis.

  • Verify the walk from the unit to a 661 stop and the final campus walk.
  • Check both directions against your first class and latest return.
  • Use the service calendar and test a mainline alternative for non-shuttle days.
  • Include grocery trips and any car or parking costs in the same comparison.
neighborhood

Lake Austin: match housing and route eligibility

Route 663 serves the university apartment complexes and Lake Austin corridor.

  • Confirm eligibility for Colorado, Gateway or Brackenridge before comparing their prices with unrestricted apartments.
  • Check the exact 663 stop and arrival at 21 st / Whitis against your class building.
  • Test the non-shuttle-day route and evening return.
  • Account for furniture in unfurnished university apartments.
neighborhood

East Campus: verify the crossing and the campus entrance

East Austin covers many distinct locations; the name alone does not establish a short trip.

  • For a nearby east-campus address, check route 640 and the exact walking connection.
  • For other east-side addresses, run an address-specific trip search instead of assuming a shuttle connection.
  • Tour crossings and the final route to your class building.
  • Confirm graduate-only eligibility where a university apartment requires it.
cost

Ask for the cost of this exact room and term

A network starting price or a floor-plan label is not a complete quote.

  • Write down the property, building, plan, bedroom privacy, price basis and lease year.
  • Request a dated itemized quote listing rent, required monthly charges, usage-billed utilities and one-time charges.
  • Ask which charges are optional, waivable or conditional and what is required to remove them.
  • Separate refundable deposits and credited advance rent from fees that add to the cost.
  • Get parking, laundry and any furniture package priced for the option you would actually choose.
  • Get any concession’s eligible plan, credit timing, expiry and repayment conditions in writing before subtracting it from the lease cost.
lease

Put occupancy dates beside payment dates

The count of payments is not necessarily the count of months you can live there.

  • Confirm the key pickup date and time, move-out deadline, payment amounts and every due date in the contract.
  • Ask whether the first payment is prorated or a full installment and whether later payments are equal.
  • Check the gap between your current move-out and the new key pickup; price temporary housing, storage and a second move if needed.
  • For a semester stay, ask for an actual semester contract rather than assuming you can exit a longer lease.
  • Read the renewal and notice clauses before treating the end date as automatic cancellation.
Put it in your notes

Occupancy start · Occupancy end · Number of payments · Payment schedule · First payment due · Temporary housing gap

lease

Know what the roommate arrangement makes you responsible for

Read the actual contract before dividing a whole-unit price.

  • For a joint lease, ask how unpaid rent or fees from another resident can affect you.
  • For an individual lease, distinguish bedroom rent from shared-area damage and other common obligations.
  • Check roommate assignment and relocation clauses rather than assuming a chosen group will stay together.
  • Agree on bill payment, guests, cleaning, sleep, study and communication using a separate roommate agreement.
  • Check how replacement roommates are approved and whether the departing resident is released in writing.
lease

Resolve screening before paying to reserve

Ask the property which route applies to your application.

  • Request the guarantor and income requirements in writing, including any deadline that changes an administrative charge.
  • If a usual guarantor is unavailable, ask which alternative deposits, prepaid rent or third-party arrangements are accepted and their full cost.
  • Ask what the guaranty covers, how long it lasts and whether renewal or roommate changes extend it.
  • For international or sponsored students, confirm which income documents the property accepts. Texas Global points to assistantship or sponsor letters; do not assume a visa document is a financial guarantee.
cost

Ask who and what the insurance charge protects

A liability charge and insurance for your belongings are different questions.

  • Ask whether the lease requires liability coverage, a renters policy or a property waiver, and what limits apply.
  • Ask whether an outside policy removes a property charge and what proof or renewal deadline is required.
  • Confirm coverage for your belongings, temporary living expenses, deductibles and replacement value; landlord insurance does not cover your possessions.
  • Do not assume a roommate policy covers your things. Check any parental coverage directly with the insurer.
  • Ask about excluded perils, including flooding, before treating a policy as complete protection.
eligibility

Identify the program before checking eligibility

S.M.A.R.T., UNO and other affordable units do not share one universal student rule.

  • Ask which program applies to this exact unit and which lease year and rent limit are being offered.
  • The City page links an approved aid-award document labeled 2024. Ask the manager which award names, income rules and documents apply to your lease year.
  • If the unit uses tax-credit or another funded program, ask how household student status and any exceptions affect eligibility.
  • Apply through the apartment community. The City does not process individual applications for these units.
  • Keep a written eligibility decision, quoted restricted rent and availability confirmation together; none establishes the others.
co-op

Compare the co-op week as well as the rent

Food, household labor and payment schedules can change the practical value.

  • Ask for the actual weekly labor requirement, meeting expectations and schedule flexibility around classes.
  • College Houses publishes up to six labor hours weekly, with two at Opsis and Nueces; ICC describes typical four to five hours plus community participation.
  • For meal houses, confirm when food service operates, holiday closures, dietary arrangements and access outside meal times.
  • Compare the room furniture, bathroom sharing and laundry cost with your apartment alternatives.
  • Confirm the exact term and payment schedule; an academic-year installment should not be read as a calendar-month rent.
co-op

Talk to the house you would join

Network prices and community descriptions cannot answer house-specific questions.

  • Arrange a tour with a current membership coordinator and ask about the room you would actually receive.
  • Ask about quiet hours, guests, pets, meals, shared bathrooms and how house decisions are made.
  • Review the written commitments for a themed community; for example, Ruth Schulze publishes substance-free agreements.
  • Ask how labor conflicts, missed shifts and semester changes are handled before signing.
move-in

Make the move-in record while the apartment is empty

Keep one dated record of the room, furnishings and existing problems.

  • Photograph and list existing damage, dirt or nonworking equipment; have roommates sign and date the condition checklist.
  • Submit the checklist using the method and deadline required by your lease and keep a copy.
  • Match the furniture and appliance inventory to what was promised, then report missing or nonworking items in writing.
  • Keep repair requests, responses and payment receipts with the lease and original condition photos.
Put it in your notes

Inspection date · Submission deadline · Checklist delivered · Furniture inventory · Repair request reference

lease

Ask for the written exit process before you need it

Reletting, subletting and a release from liability are separate contract questions.

  • Find the fixed-term notice requirement and delivery method in the lease; do not assume a universal notice period.
  • Ask whether a quoted reletting charge ends liability or whether rent continues until another tenant begins.
  • Obtain landlord permission before arranging a sublease and clarify who remains responsible.
  • Ask for a written release when the agreed process is completed. Special legal termination rights may apply in some circumstances; use the official guide or a qualified adviser for your situation.
move-out

Prepare the deposit record before moving out

A deposit refund is distinct from advertised rent savings.

  • Send a written forwarding address and keep evidence of delivery, surrender and returned keys.
  • Compare move-out photos with the original inventory and retain the final account and any deduction list.
  • Texas law generally requires a security-deposit refund by 30 days after surrender, subject to the written-forwarding-address condition and lawful deductions. Review the official guide for the applicable conditions.
  • If the accounting is disputed, use the condition record and seek appropriate legal help rather than relying on a generic calculator.
application

Verify the recipient before a reservation payment

Use the official property channel and keep the complete offer.

  • Check the property’s official contact details independently and confirm the address, plan and counterparty named in the application.
  • Treat pressure to pay immediately or unusual payment methods as reasons to verify the offer before continuing.
  • Ask which amounts are application fees, deposits or advance rent and what happens if the application is declined or you cancel.
  • Save the quote, fee schedule, application terms and receipt together.
