How does study abroad work at UT Austin?

Choose a UT program, confirm how its classes fit your degree, and apply in MyAbroad by that program’s deadline. Texas Global lists November 1 for its May Term faculty-led programs, while other deadlines run from October through March.

Which term and class do you need?

Begin with a Texas Global information session or peer mentor, then search programs for the term, subject and location that fit. UT offers reciprocal exchanges, affiliated programs, faculty-led courses and internships. Each program has its own application and deadline.

Before choosing a country, open your degree audit and ask your adviser where the classes could count. Under Texas Global’s credit rules, exchange credits count as UT credit and their grades affect your UT GPA. Affiliate courses normally bring transfer credit without affecting the UT GPA. Faculty-led UT courses affect your GPA, while affiliate-taught parts of hybrid programs follow affiliate rules. Get the course match approved before relying on it to finish a requirement.

When is the application due?

The current application table lists November 1 for Texas Global’s May Term and some summer faculty-led programs, and December 1 for most of its summer faculty-led programs. Spring affiliate and exchange deadlines ended by October 15. Fall or academic-year affiliate and exchange dates run February 15 through March 15, but your selected program page supplies its exact deadline.

Start one long semester before the deadline if you can. That leaves time to compare courses, talk with your adviser, prepare a passport and find funding. McCombs, Engineering, Law and some department programs have their own dates, so use the row for the program you want.

How do I finish both applications?

  1. Open the program page and save its deadline and coordinator.
  2. Complete the MyAbroad application and pay the $75 nonrefundable application fee.
  3. Complete the second application required by the UT department, partner university or affiliate.
  4. Watch MyAbroad and your email for requests and a decision.
  5. After acceptance, complete the program’s travel, health, housing and registration steps.

What will the full program cost?

Program costs aren’t the same for every option, and UT doesn’t publish one price for studying abroad. Use the budget on the program page, then add airfare, passport or visa costs, local travel and personal spending that it leaves out.

Texas Global says eligible federal, state and institutional aid may apply, but the rules depend on the program and enrollment. Share the exact program and term with Texas One Stop. Search scholarships while applying because a funding deadline can arrive before the program decision.

When should I commit?

Compare the written course plan, full budget and calendar with staying at UT. If a required class has no approved match, decide whether the experience is worth moving that class to another term.

Apply when the program advances your degree, its total cost works with confirmed funding, and you can finish both applications on time. A beautiful destination isn’t enough if the credit or bill is still a guess.
