How does credit by exam work at UT beyond AP scores?
UT can award placement or course credit from CLEP, IB and language or department exams, but you must earn the required score and petition for the course. Claiming credit costs $10 per credit hour; placement alone has no petition fee.

Which exam maps to your course?
Student Testing Services publishes the current exam list, score rules and course matches. Beyond AP, UT uses IB and CLEP scores, UT-developed exams in languages and other subjects, and some exams given by academic departments. The available test and required score depend on the course.
Usually, you can’t claim credit by exam for a course in which you already have a passing or failing grade. The catalog allows an exception when your transfer course carries fewer hours than the corresponding UT course. UT’s eligibility rules also say a prospective student may test, but must become a current or former UT student before receiving course credit. An unsuccessful UT exam attempt doesn’t appear on the official transcript.
Do you need placement or credit?
Placement lets a qualifying score satisfy a prerequisite without adding the earlier course or its hours. Credit does both: it satisfies the prerequisite and adds the course with CR rather than a letter grade. The catalog policy says placement can later become credit, but posted credit can’t be changed back or removed.
Ask your adviser to compare the course with your degree audit before claiming it. Extra hours can affect your degree plan, residency requirements, the tuition rebate or excessive-hours tuition, and a graduate or professional school may prefer a class taken for a grade.
How do you take a UT exam?
- Open the exam description and check eligibility, dates, required score and test fee.
- If it’s a department exam, get that department’s permission first.
- Register with Student Testing Services and pay the $25 nonrefundable registration fee.
- Take the exam and wait for the score to appear in your test results.
- Discuss the exact course award with your adviser before petitioning.
What will I pay at each step?
The fee page lists a $25 registration fee, a test fee that varies by exam, and a $10-per-credit-hour charge to claim credit. Claiming a 3-hour course therefore costs $30. Payment is due within 14 days of the test or credit petition, and an unpaid balance creates a financial bar.
Placement doesn’t carry the petition charge. If you take a UT exam, its test fee still applies when you choose placement. Check that exam’s description for its price.
Should you claim the course now?
Use the online course petition page with your EID. Only you can submit the petition. Current students’ petitioned courses are normally sent to the Registrar on the first workday of each week; incoming students won’t see the course until their first class day.
Choose credit when the hours satisfy a real degree need and your adviser agrees. Choose placement when you only need the next course and don’t want permanent hours yet. If neither helps your plan now, UT says you can wait and claim an eligible score later.
